Chuck Yeager Flies Under Bridge & Friday-Fill Ins

Friday Fill-Ins Is Below

(drawing from the Charleston Gazette-Mail)

Today marks the 6oth anniversary of Chuck Yeager flying under the South Side Bridge in Charleston, West Virginia. The entire story was this past Sunday Gazette Mail. I learned more about this event in this article than I ever knew.

I wasn't aware this historical event was kept a secret for many years.
As the people were watching the boat racing that afternoon along the Kanawha River, an announcement came over the loud speaker saying Captain Chuck Yeager would be making a pass over the city. The crowd looked high in the sky, but seconds later the F-80 came out of nowhere and flew under the South Side Bridge. There wasn't any pictures taken because this all happened so fast.

One of the spectators was a newspaperman. When he got to his office to write about what had happened he received a call from the military asking what he would be writing. They told the reporter if anything unusual occurred it would be a violation of the Air Force and FAA regulations. Therefore, news of what happened that day was only shared by those who actually witnessed this flight. This is what was written in the newspaper the next day.

"Capt. Charles Yeager of Hamlin, the first man to exceed the speed of sound in a Bell XS-1 jet, buzzed the course shortly after 3:30 p.m. as he started back to his base in California.

"Officials present said his speed when he flew over the river probably was more than 600 miles an hour. As he flew over in a jet Shooting Star, he did three slow rolls before disappearing from sight."

Chuck Yeager was born and raised in Hamlin, West Virginia, just 20 miles from where I live.

If you have time, read the entire story. It's very entertaining.

1. One of the best concerts/plays/movies I ever saw that I really didn't think I'd like was Hair.

2. Lasagna, tossed salad, and Italian Bread is a recipe I recently made (or meal I recently ordered) that was delicious!

3. It's time for fall cleaning.

4. Chocolate chip mint ice cream is quite refreshing.

5. If I never hear the word diet again, it'll be too soon.

6. To one side of the curving road was a mountain, and on the other was a valley.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to
just chillin, tomorrow my plans include catching up reading blogs and Sunday, I want to wash my car!

Hi Linda,

Wow, what an interesting story on Chuck Yeager! I'm going to read the article.

Enjoyed your Friday-Fill Ins. I'm trying to do some Fall cleaning, but the beautiful, sunny days are just too tempting, and I give in to the temptation and go out and enjoy myself. Heck with the fall cleaning!

Have a lovely weekend!

Hugs,

Renie

You just gave me an ideal for my blog posting which is to list the things that I need to do or have done. Thanks!
